lol thought the thread name would get some attention ;D
ok so i'm thinking of a project, i'm looking into getting my first landy, been suggested to go for a disco but that reallywont offer me what i want.
the plan is to kit the back of the def as a sort of camper (without the sink cooker etc, these would all be camping type things that would live on the roof rack)
so this means i will be welding a frame up the will make two sets of inward facing seats fold down into each other and make the whole load area a kind of matress.
my question is how big is the defender load area? will i be comfortable in a 90 or is a 110 my best bet? (also always the possibility of not travelling alone so would need to sleep 2)
this is to be my day to day car however being as i hate beach holidays with a passion i want to start taking longer holidays and driving through europe...or wherever the def wants to take me.
for these trips the roof rack will be used for most of the nic naks i'd need so the load space will be mainly bed area (although the frame i've designed will allow the load space to be used when in "seat" mode)
please any advice of load space would be awesome

i've looked into roof tents however they look really expensive for whats essentially just a tent, the frame work i'm thinking of making is basic and would only take me a few hours to weld up, board over and carpet. would look invisible pretty much and could be folded away without too much fuss. i would however need to make some bespoke seats as the back rest of the seats would become the centre part of the matress i.e if you imagine two sets of inward facing seats facing each other. imagine a frame from where your feet would be. this frame will then fold out to create a stable surface for the backrest (suitably backed with mdf or somthing). so the main bench seats would remain standard (ish) and it would only be the backrest that would need to be sized so as to fill the gap. i've probably made that sound really complicated but in my small mind its a pretty simple frame and something that once i've got my landy i can measure up and make in the garage and would only need to put in the defender on installment day which given the amount of space i have is pretty handy. so....yes not really liking roof tents lol plus sleeping inside seems alot nicer. ok so now to start the savings account and in a few months go 110 shopping

them drive away awnings are really good like matt said you can get then for like £150 for a good one.
the only thing with a defender is its not the quietest most comfortable choice if you driving around europe.
it is down to personal choice but i would buy a disco and a roof tent, it will cost about the same as a defender anyway

definately worth looking into both. im by no means a LR expert so best to take your advice than get the wrong thing. been looking into an idea of getting a trailer and converting that which would mean i could go for a smaller LR like a 90 (dont know why its just something about the 90 i like) at least with this i can have a nice offroader to blitz some lanes with and also hitch up the off road trailer for some long term touring, looked into sankey trailers, and conversions people have done on them. possibly best of both worlds. my only concern with roof tents is wind ive seen mixed reviews of them and wind seems to be the scary word, at least if i were to build it it can be quite robust and able to withstand the elements a bit, and with a sankey chassis its going to make the trip in one piece lol but again its all ideas at the moment all up for debate

right been digging even more and from what i've seen the trailer option is more of a pain in the arse than a benefit and being as it will only be me (possibly one other) going and will only be for max of 3 weeks at a time the equipment can be stroed on the roof etc.
so back to the roof tent as suggested and looking at kitting out the back of the LR for storage

disco all the way mate much more comfort and more than capable off road, theres as much room in a disco as a 110 i would say, but as already been said its just down to personal choice, but what ever you choose hope it all works for the best
